Unexpected Journey: Finding Joy and Appreciation through Running

Beyond the Track: Unpacking the Influence of Running Culture in Ethiopia

Unexpected Journey: Finding Joy and Appreciation through Running

Five years ago, when I first arrived in the United States from Ethiopia, little did I know that running would become such a significant part of my life. It wasn’t something I had ever imagined myself doing. Despite facing initial struggles, I began to fall in love with the sport and appreciate the sheer joy of being able to run. Running taught me to appreciate the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and to enjoy the freedom of movement.

What amazed me was the remarkable feeling of endurance that came with running. I could push myself to run without stopping, and then effortlessly transition into a casual walk, as if I hadn’t just accomplished something incredible. Alongside this newfound physical accomplishment, I found myself appreciating the running community I became a part of. It provided me with a team, united by a common goal, where we could share experiences and learn from one another’s journeys.

But it wasn’t just the people that made running special for me. It was also the places it took me. I found myself exploring new trails and hidden corners of nature that I would have otherwise missed. Running became my passport to adventure, my ticket to witness the beauty of the world around me. From serene sunrises and sunsets to breathtaking landscapes, each run gifted me with unforgettable moments and a deep appreciation for the wonders of nature.

Running has become an integral part of my life, an escape from the demands of everyday routines. It has taught me invaluable lessons in resilience and persistence. Each run is a testament to my determination and a reminder that growth comes from embracing challenges head-on. Though I may not be a competitive runner, the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment I derive from running is immeasurable. As of today, June 23, 2023, I am on a streak of 299 consecutive days of running.

Through this research project, I aim to delve deeper into the impact of running on individuals and communities, with a specific focus on Ethiopia, my home country. Drawing from my personal journey and experiences, I have witnessed the transformative power of running, bringing joy, resilience, and a sense of fulfillment while connecting me with a supportive running community. I seek to explore the underlying factors that shape the running culture in Ethiopia and understand how it influences society. By examining personal stories, scientific studies, and community initiatives, I aim to uncover the historical successes and potential pitfalls associated with the running culture, both for the runners themselves and the larger community. This research will contribute to a better understanding of the transformative power of running for personal growth and community connection in Ethiopia. Join me on this journey as we discover the incredible experiences and valuable lessons that running has to offer in the vibrant cultural landscape of Ethiopia.

In the following pages, I attempt to go through the Objectives below:

  • Explore the impact of running on individuals and communities in Ethiopia.
  • Investigate the underlying factors that shape the running culture and its influence on society.
  • Uncover historical successes and potential pitfalls associated with the running culture for runners and the community.

Although the information was repetitive, the combination of sources contributed to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. This study aims to highlight the positive aspects of running, such as joy and health benefits, while analyzing its influence on society—inspiring unity, promoting healthier lifestyles, and creating economic opportunities. Through comprehensive insights, I aim to enrich understanding of Ethiopia’s running culture and its impact on runners and the community.
